Recipient of the 2012 MacArthur “Genius” Award, Natalia Almada combines artistic expression with social inquiry to make films that are both personal reflections and critical social commentaries. Her previous directing credits include– Al Otro Lado (Tribeca 2005), El General (2009 Sundance documentary Directing Award), El Velador (Cannes 2011) and her narrative feature Todo Lo Demás (New York Film Festival 2016). She lives in Mexico City and San Francisco.

Icarus Films is proud to distribute all of Natalia Almada's films:

  • All Water Has a Perfect Memory - A poignant experimental documentary that explores the effects of tragedy and remembrance on a bi-cultural family.

  • Everything Else (Todo lo Demás) - Inspired by Hannah Arendt’s idea that bureaucracy is one of the worst forms of violence, Everything Else (Todo lo Demás) explores the interior life of a Mexican bureaucrat as she attempts to rekindle her life. A kind of “observational narrative” the film is a mesmerizing contemplation on solitude.

  • El General - The filmmaker reflects on her great-grandfather, who was a revolutionary general and then president of Mexico.

  • Al Otro Lado (To The Other Side) - An aspiring corrido composer faces two life-changing choices: to traffic drugs or unlawfully cross the border into the United States.

  • Users - Users begins with a mother’s question–will my children love the perfect machines more than they love me, their imperfect mother?

  • El Velador: The Night Watchman - From dusk to dawn Martin watches over the extravagant mausoleums of Mexico's most notorious drug lords.
